Why didn't the following kit match the Bigham's  above, since the original ancestor is the same?  Generation 4 had a Non-Paternal Event, in other words, Miss Bingham had children by an unnamed man, but raised them with the Bigham surname.  Their son, Isaac's dna would have matched his father.

Bingham Surname Project Participants

The lineages below have a link to the test result pages.  If you join our project you  must provide as much information about your lineage as you can as this webpage is dedicated to linking you with other families of the same lineage.   It is very important you provide the best proven research you can.  I cannot be responsible for incorrect lineage. If you chose to not include your name, you will be identified only as "Son" and all inquiries about your lineage will be passed on to you.  Since we have all been doing research for many years, and have built up groups of people who think we are related, this is a place for them to connect with you.  Seeing your name may encourage them to join our project and see, once and for all if you (we) are related.   I  placed lineages together that have a dna match and color coded them.  The newest kits awaiting test results are at the top.  The results have been rearranged to fit more closely with the results chart FTDNA sends me.   There are times that the kit results and lineages get moved around and this is done to keep both lineages and results in the same order that FTDNA releases their results.

What  does all of this testing prove?  By comparing genetic testing we can prove that these men are related at some point in the past.   Legal records of Reuben Bingham was first found in 1795 in Lee County, VA.  A Reuben, Thomas and William were found in Clairborne Co., TN, then into Kentucky.   James R. Bingham and his three brothers were mentioned in the September court records of  Knox Co., KY in 1808, which coincides with the time Rueben and the others left TN and headed north to Kentucky - a connection? a very good possibility.

John B. Bingham was first found in early Georgia records.

James S. Bingham was born about 1825 in MO, and was found in 1850 living in Texas.  These four men share a common genetic thread and as researchers we are working to prove how we connect.
Kit number 8143  is a perfect example of a non- paternal event.   Bill knew that his grandmother in generation 4 wasn't married, but she raised her children as Bighams.  Events like this can cause confusion for people depending on the y-chromosome to prove parenthood.

A recent dna article states that an estimated  4% of the population is a result of a non-paternal event, or an undocumented adoption.

One of the most important things we've proven with this project is that not all Binghams, Bighams, Bingamans are the same name with a different spelling.  Many of these ancestors lived, travelled, and settled near each other - perhaps wondering if they were related but never knowing.

It appears that there are cases where it is impossible to tell whether  or not the Bighams and Binghams were separate genetic families.
Kit 38391
Bigham or Bingham?

Written records and tombstones prove that generations 1 through 3 used the name "Bigham" exclusively.  Starting at least with generation 6, the family in TN used the name "Bingham" and still do to this day.

Steve wrote the book
"Binghams of Southeastern Kentucky"
which is the bible for southern Binghams.

This is was the first case where he and his cousin were two steps off at 12 markers and mutations  did not increase as they refined their kits.  Now they have a 35/37 match

POINDEXTER
An example of a genetic surprise is kit number 55159:  A Poindexter who is genetically a Bingham.  Could there be a connection with this John Poindexter and John Poindexter Bingham, brother of James R., Tapley, and Harmon Bingham of Kentucky and Missouri?

Why a POINDEXTER in a Bingham/Bigham/Bingaman dna project?  This man joined the Poindexter dna project only to find his dna matched kit number 7290 with only a two step difference in a 37 marker test.  He is genetically a Bingham.  This is the surprise we find in dna versus the surname a person has lived with for many generations.

The kits below are a 25/25 match.  This means that there is a 61.17% chance that they share a common ancestor within four generations.  In eight generations is a 84.95% chance; in 12 generations a 94.15%, etc.

Kit 102257 and 91030 are related at generation 6 Elmer and Amos are brothers.

Two ladies purchased these kits and are  cousins to the dna donors. This is a perfect example of how women can get involved in a y-chromosome dna test.    Email me so I can direct you through the process. just click on the link to my email address above.

The kits below show too great of a genetic distance to be related to others in this project.

On the Genetic Distance page, there is a limit on the maximum genetic distance between the project member you have selected and those who appear on the comparison list. The maximum genetic distances are:

Y-DNA12:  3
Y-DNA25: 10
Y-DNA37: 20
Y-DNA67: 40
The maximum genetic distances have been set to be more than what one would expect to find in the genealogical time frame and for higher testing levels, the historic time frame.

Kit 160101
No lineage has been provided.  This is a 12 marker kit and matches the above kits 11/12.

Binghams
of
Connecticut.
This is a huge line and would benefit everyone to have more participants so we could track any mutations on the cell level.  Mutations can happen at random and do not indicate anything negative about the family.
The kit for the descendant of David Bingham was not run at   FTDNA.   His results can only be compared  on 22 of the markers that coincide with FTDNA.  He matches kit 7310 on these 22 markers.  However, as you all know these few matching markers means if they are related, there would be many generations to their most common ancestor.  To compare results go to www.ysearch.org and compare your results for   kit # P8JDF.
Several participants have found their papertrail did not match their dna trail.   I have presented the lineages as they are given to me.  If you discover your dna doesn't match your papertrail, or family history use this as an opportunity to discover your true connections by further research.  An example of this situation is shown in two separate instances: kit number 55159 who joined the Poindexter dna project only to find he is genetically a Bingham.  and kit number 56417 who transferred to our project from the Gardner dna project.   The numbers don't lie!
At the 12-marker level, kits  60843, 44126, 62475, and 54211 are an 11/12 match with kit number 135098.

At this level, there is only a 6.67% of being related within 4 generations.

If kit #135098 and 54211  would refine their tests to 24, 37, 0r 67 markers they would get a better idea where or if they connect to their Most Common Ancestor.

These kits do not match anyone in the project:    See note above regarding paternal events.  Early, unofficial adoption could also explain the lack of matches.
